Abstract:

We investigate the phenomenon of wellbeing washing, where companies claim to prioritise the wellbeing of their employees but fail to implement such claims in practice. Specifically, we focus on wellbeing disclosures in ESG reports of S&P 100 companies. To determine whether organisations with extensive disclosures regarding employee wellbeing have more satisfied employees, we examine the association between these disclosures and the ratings of employees on the Glassdoor website. We find that, overall, wellbeing disclosures in ESG reports are negatively associated with contemporaneous Glassdoor ratings of current employees. This indicates a mismatch between the two sources of voluntary disclosures and suggests the existence of wellbeing washing.
