Abstract:

While digital technology is changing the entrepreneurial landscape across many global regions, in patriarchal societies where feminism remains sidelined, there is little understanding of its impact on women entrepreneurship. Drawing from the theory of social change, we explore ways in which Egyptian women entrepreneurs leverage digital technology to break through a social and cultural ‘glass ceiling’ in their business environment. A comprehensive entrepreneurship–digital technology analysis revealed sequential self–serving actions deployed by Egyptian women entrepreneurs through digital technology to foster small, but notable, step changes in their patriarchal society. Understanding of such actions and steps geared toward breaking a socio–cultural ‘glass ceiling’ contributes new knowledge at the digital technology, women entrepreneurship, and social change interface by elaborating an Egyptian solution for women entrepreneurship in their environment. Such perspectives have academic, policy and social implications for women entrepreneurship.
