Abstract:

Drawing upon the Leader-Member Exchange (LMX) theory, this study examines the influence of responsible leadership (RL) on employee’ well-being. Furthermore, this research investigates trust in leader and organisational justice as underlying mechanisms, and transparent communication as boundary condition between RL and employee well-being. This research scrutinizes a moderated-mediation model to verify the hypotheses of the study. The empirical results based on 328 Thai employees reveals that there is a direct impact of RL on employee well-being encompassing all four dimensions, namely, psychological, social, workplace and subjective well-being. Additionally, this study uncovers the significance of RL in promoting employee well-being through the mechanism of trust in leader and organisational justice. However, transparent communication does not moderate effect between RL and trust in leader. Importantly, this study suggests that trust in leader and organisational justice are key processes through which RL influences employee well-being. This study also sheds light as to when RL matters most in terms of employee well-being through low or high transparent communication. It is an early attempt to contribute to the body of RL literature by investigating the mechanisms and boundary conditions through which RL influences employee well-being.
