Abstract:

The pandemic has had far-reaching consequences on the digital wellbeing of users and continues to do so even now after WHO declared it no longer a public health emergency. Lack of clear definition and understanding of what digital wellbeing means in literature however has stalled development of digital wellbeing research critical especially now with the increase in digital services and DMT use. It is from this perspective that this paper engaged in a critical literature review to conceptualise the digital wellbeing process. Part of the challenge in understanding the concept of digital wellbeing has been due to the complexity of what wellbeing itself means (e.g., cause vs outcomes approach, subjective vs objective perspectives, positive vs negative outcomes, temporal variability). To understand the concept of digital wellbeing therefore the paper has decoupled users use of DMTs from their wellbeing to draw out mechanisms through which this relationship exists as recommended by (Büchi, 2021). In doing so, the paper has provided a roadmap for contemporary digital wellbeing research.
