Abstract:

This developmental paper explores the work life experiences of migrant women STEM professionals in the UK across the periods of Brexit and COVID-19. Although, past studies have unpacked critical issues in women’s migration including entrepreneurship, refugee status, and career advancement, this study assesses the work-life experiences of migrant women professionals in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) professions. This research focuses on migrant women STEM professionals of Asian, Black and European ethnicities resident in the UK before and after Post Brexit and COVID-19 era. This research identifies the ideologies that influence migrant women STEM professionals’ experiences in terms of resource and time allocation in both work and life domains. The fixed versus expandable ideologies reflects the scarcity of resources between the work and life domains. Whereas segmentation versus integration ideologies shows how individuals perceive and use resources to enhance both domains interchangeably. Drawing on intersectionality theory, this research adopts an inter-categorical analytic approach to explore the unique privileges and disadvantages across these intersecting groups influence their resource allocation as it extends to work-life experiences. This is a shift from the dominant intersectionality literature on single group, specific groups. But it is a focus on multiple groups intersecting work-life experiences. Adopting a qualitative design, the research employs semi-structured interviews with 33 migrant women STEM professionals across the three ethnicities via purposive and snowball sampling. The findings aim to reveal the overlapping and unique identities that influence the work-life experiences of these women in the UK.
