Abstract:

Hybrid work blurs physical and psychological boundaries, complicating the cognitive mechanics of role transition. Integrating role transition and boundary theories, this study proposes a cognitive resource model wherein daily goal progress functions as a psychological boundary marker. We posit that perceived progress influences attention residue, thereby liberating cognitive resources for immediate home engagement and accelerating next-day work re-entry. Crucially, we theorize that the efficacy of this mechanism is contingent upon a cross-level interaction between daily work location and structural hybrid work characteristics. A planned two-week experience sampling study will investigate these dynamics. This research contributes to the literature by mapping the cognitive micro-pathways of the work-home interface and explicating how spatial and structural contexts jointly shape the resolution of competing demands.
