Abstract:

Ecological sustainability is viewed as an important agenda for businesses in the current business environment. As a result of this, businesses are faced with the dilemma of balancing between organizational growth and conservation of the natural resources for the sake of future generations. Even though environmental sustainability is gaining traction, evidence suggests that organisations do not conform to practicing the same to attain increased firm performance. The purpose of this study was to assess the impact of Green Human Resource Management (GHRM) on firm performance- a Case Study of the UK Retail Sector. The researcher set to achieve three main objectives. First, to study the GHRM strategies used by the UK’s key retail in driving firm performance. Second, to investigate the role of GHRM on firm performance in the UK retail industry and third, to explore the challenges faced by the UK retail industry in driving firm performance through GHRM. The findings of this study confirm that training and development, as well as reward management, have an impact on firm performance, either positive or negative on UK retailers. In addition, a number of challenges continue to face implementation of GHRM practices. They include doubts on financial benefits of GHRM, resistance to change, organizational culture and management of training and development programs.
