Abstract:

The following article draws from the accounts of the woman-led organisation Women’s Network PEI (WNPEI) and their experiences in raising funding to support their not-for-profit initiatives of women’s client services. Despite its significance in the growing discourse of dignity research within business and management, there are few contributions focusing on women leaders, dignity in funding acquisitions and small-size, not-for-profit all-women identifying agencies. Findings from the case suggest that dignity plays a crucial role in the organisation's ability to operate effectively as the additional requests and arbitrary deliverables placed by funders for accountability detract from the meaningful work of supporting and empowering local women through educational programming. Successful programming leads to reducing resource strain on provincial healthcare and social service systems. The current research contributes to literature in small business, management and gender leadership about the perceived indignity of funding acquisition for the all-women WNPEI organisation in Atlantic Canada.
