Abstract:

Open communities in which people share and evaluate creative content have flourished but faced critical challenges in maintaining high-quality contributors. This study explores the role of Decentralized Autonomous Organization (DAO) as a potential solution to this issue. DAO is an emerging form of organization based on blockchain. In DAO, decisions are made in a decentralized and automated manner and cryptographic tokens are used to incentivize contributors. Since DAO is still in its infancy, appropriate governance for maintaining quality contributors is yet to be understood. Using agent-based simulation, we explore how DAO governances that reward contributors differently lead to different community evolution in the long run. We compare three scenarios: egalitarian, merit-based, and property-based, where DAO rewards contributors equally, based on reputation from previous contributions, and based on capital investment in DAO, respectively. We compare these DAO governances with the existing open communities, discussing the potential implications of tokenizing creativity in open communities.
