Abstract:

Recent advances in AI algorithms, semiconductors, and sensors have enabled a much greater degree of vehicle automation than ever before. Consequently, this has led to a rapid increase in the use of autonomous driving technologies in new electric vehicles. Within this paper, we use configuration theory to unravel which factors influence the integration of autonomous technologies into electric vehicles and their subsequent effect on vehicle prices. We find that standard, partial, and optional configurations have positive effects on the adoption of autonomous driving technologies. These direct effects are moderated to varying degrees by the breadth of automation capabilities, different market segments, and specific international markets as well. Our mediation analysis identifies that different technological configurations have positive effects on the adoption of autonomous driving technologies, which in turn, raises the price of new electric vehicles.
