Abstract:

Organisations develop and manage start-up incubators or internal accelerators (Hausberg and Korreck, 2021), that provide funding, infrastructure and mentoring to start-up founders and entrepreneurs to foster and develop business ideas (Scillitoe and Chakrabarti, 2010, Pettersen et al., 2015). Organisational drivers and motivations for incubating or accelerating start-ups are varied, often reflecting orthodox open innovation motivations (Chesbrough, 2003), such as accessing new ideas, technologies, and alternative solutions to ongoing challenges (Breivik-Mayer et al. 2020). This developmental paper proposes a research gap in terms of the need to explore commercial incubation as an incubating organisation resilience routine, with this routine expressed through organisations leveraging incubation as a means of stress-testing business model robustness (Haaker et al., 2017) and therefore, acting as a hedge against disruption (Morrish et al., 2019). This paper concludes with the proposed next steps to address this gap by identifying and considering research questions and an appropriate research domain and data collection strategy.
