Abstract:

Should a passionate entrepreneur be a perfectionist? When does the combination of passion and perfectionism nurture and when does it cripple an entrepreneur’s eudaimonic well-being? Finding the answers to these questions, this study challenges prevalent beliefs about the negative sides of obsessive passion and perfectionism. Drawing upon the dualistic model of passion and model of perfectionism, the study with 190 entrepreneurs in a dynamic and fast-growing economy reveals that entrepreneurs’ harmonious passion has a positive association and obsessive passion has a positive and increasing returns association with their eudaimonic well-being. These relationships are moderated by two types of perfectionism (self-oriented and socially prescribed). Such findings extend the literature on obsessive passion which mostly emphasizes its negativity and contributes to the perfectionism literature by showing its both positive and negative sides. The study provides entrepreneurs with implications about different outcomes coming from the combination of entrepreneurial passion and perfectionism.
