Abstract:

Microaggression is a subtle, often unintentional, form of discrimination or bias expressed through comments, gestures, or environmental cues directed at individuals based on their membership in a marginalized group. These actions or expressions, while seemingly minor, can have cumulative, significant psychological and emotional impacts on the recipients, reinforcing societal biases and perpetuating inequalities. This study seeks to merge research from various academic fields to deepen our understanding of microaggressions, especially in contexts where power imbalances and social identity biases exist. It defines microaggressions, explores their causes, classifies their types, and looks at their consequences, emphasizing the role of power dynamics. The study shows how microaggressions maintain biases against people based on gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, class, and disability, underlining their role in keeping social inequalities alive.

The main achievement of this work is creating a clear conceptual framework that links different areas of study, making the complex issue of microaggressions easier to understand. This framework not only summarizes what we already know but also points out what we need to learn, guiding future research. By focusing on power dynamics, this paper adds new insights to the discussion about biases based on social identity, showing how subtle discrimination connects with broader social issues. Additionally, the paper suggests a research plan that crosses traditional academic boundaries. This plan encourages a thorough approach to studying microaggressions, combining insights from psychology, sociology, organizational behavior, and more to better understand these hidden forms of discrimination.

The importance of this research goes beyond academia. By exploring microaggressions more deeply, the study contributes to debates in the field and lays the foundation for actions that can make different environments more inclusive and equal. It invites academics, practitioners, and policymakers to think again about the complexities of social interactions and the deep-seated nature of power dynamics.

In conclusion, this paper aims to inspire a change in how we view, research, and tackle microaggressions. It calls for researchers to work together to delve into the nuances of microaggressions, fostering a dialogue and actions that aim to break down the roots of social inequality. Through this detailed examination, the study hopes to motivate more research, encourage meaningful conversations, and lead to significant policy and practice changes, helping to build fairer and just societies.
