Abstract:

This study explores the domain of leadership within cooperative organisations, aiming to dissect how governance structures influence leadership dynamics and, in turn, affect organisational effectiveness and worker welfare. The motivation behind this exploration stems from a growing recognition of the need for alternative organizational models that prioritise worker welfare. Traditional organisations, often criticized for their hierarchical structures and profit-driven motives, frequently sideline employee well-being and participatory decision-making. In contrast, cooperatives, with their democratic governance and emphasis on worker rights, present a compelling model that promises a more equitable and participatory approach to organisational management and leadership.

Employing a qualititative research methodology grounded in constructivist philosophy, this study endeavours to understand the nuanced interactions between governance mechanisms and leadership practices within cooperatives. The constructivist perspective, which posits that reality is socially constructed through interactions and shared meanings, provides a suitable lens for examining the subjective experiences and collective dynamics that characterise leadership in cooperatives.

Data collection will be conducted through semi-structured interviews with key personnel from worker cooperatives in the Northwest of England. This methodological choice facilitates an in-depth exploration of personal experiences, opinions, and insights, allowing for a rich, nuanced understanding of the interplay between governance structures and leadership practices within these unique organisational settings.

The anticipated outcome of this study is to offer theoretical insights that highlight the distinctive qualities of leadership in cooperatives. By doing so, it aims to contribute to the broader discourse on organisational management, proposing cooperatives as a viable alternative to traditional businesses that inherently values and upholds worker welfare. This research holds the potential to inform policy, practice, and future studies on organisational design, leadership, and worker-centric models, providing a roadmap for developing more democratic, inclusive, and effective organisations.
