Abstract:

Conflict is normal in family firms due to generational differences, goals and objectives in a changing environment. While most of the research on family firm conflict has been focused on internal process and the local context in which family members operate, little attention has been given to international influences. Using and advancing human capital theory in entrepreneurship, and analysing primary qualitative evidence from interviews with returnee entrepreneurs in China, this study looks at conflict related to internationalisation factors with their family members and other stakeholders. Contributing to human capital theory and practice, three strategies of conflict resolution in family firm international entrepreneurship are identified and discussed. These results could have important policy implications in emerging economies where returnee entrepreneurs play an important role in their development through relationships with international markets.
