Abstract:

This paper examines how home-teleworkers use information and communication technologies to manage their work/nonwork boundaries. This is an important topic given that, post-pandemic many workers undertake a certain amount of home-based working, and that for such workers, the blurring of the work/nonwork boundary can be a challenge. We present qualitative data from interviews conducted pre-pandemic with a purposive sample of 20 people with quite distinct attitudes to boundary management. We go beyond the distinction between segmentation/integration preferences with regards to the management of this boundary and develop a typology with five categories of people, based on boundary management preferences, which is sensitive to the bi-directional nature of this boundary. Our analysis highlights the diverse boundary management practices that are utilised, and highlights the differences between people in each of the five boundary management groups with regarding to how they use ICTs to manage the work/nonwork boundary.
