Abstract:

Members of an organisation need to act strategically to ensure competitiveness. Thus, it is of value
to study individuals’ attributes that contribute to enacting strategies in everyday work, as well as the
mechanisms that may support these attributes. This study examines the relationships between
psychological safety (PS), learning and strategic employee attributes (SEA) utilizing quantitative
methods with a nationally representative sample (n = 1023). The findings indicate that strategic
attributes can be strengthened through both psychological safety and learning. In addition, learning
acts as a mediator between PS and SEA, illustrating the importance of trust and open
communication in fostering learning opportunities. This study extends the theoretical understanding
of learning and strategy enactment, focusing on strategic practitioners at all organisational levels
while broadening methodological diversity within Strategy-as-Practice (SAP) literature. Findings
indicate that organisations should invest in learning and open communication in order to strengthen
the strategic attributes of their employees.
