Abstract:

The purpose of this paper is to investigate a case study Chartered Management Degree Apprenticeship (CMDA) programme, whereby working class origins and lived experiences of apprentices in attaining social mobility aspirations, are explored.

Applying a case study perspective and using interpretive, qualitative methods, the paper identifies themes of work based learning as enablers for apprentice attainment of career aspirations from the case study CMDA programme.

In conclusion, social networks and relationships and communities of practice on the programme should be enhanced to include improved opportunities for workplace mentoring, industry-specific seminars, workshops or forums, provided by the HEI, as well as developing an alumni network to connect with former apprentices. Such developments would improve the situated learning experience, contribute to the building of a sense of belonging and improve apprentice success on the programme and ultimately the attainment of their social mobility aspirations from the case study CMDA programme.
