Abstract:

Unemployment is rising and its high percentages compress the content of labor relations that are subject to deregulation and serious degradation. This research examines the impact of financial crisis on employee relations in the workplace as this is expressed via emergent regulations & procedures which impact work climate, via creation of conflicts, via negative influence on established interpersonal relationships, on competitiveness among colleagues, on solidarity among people, on feelings of suspicion, on pluralism, on employee interest in performing additional work, on employers and colleagues’ behaviour, on freedom of expression, on freedom of initiatives, on work communication and dissemination. The study applies a critical literature review and an empirical case study method examining a sample of 176 employees in Greece and adopts a mixed qualitative and quantitative analysis via use of descriptive statistics and cross tabulation of examined variables. The study confirms the impact of economic crisis on employee relationships in the workplace as this is expressed through the aforementioned ways and indicates that in some cases demographic characteristics of employees can either contribute to minimization of the negative impact or to the opposite.
