Abstract:

This paper explores the concept of neurodiversity within the context of project management, focusing on how neurodivergent individuals, encompassing conditions such as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), dyslexia, dyscalculia, dyspraxia, and Tourette’s syndrome, provide unique insights into this area of research and practice. Neurodiversity, a concept that challenges traditional notions of neurological "normality" and celebrates cognitive differences, is increasingly being recognised for the diversity it brings, such as process-driven capabilities, creativity, and innovative problem-solving skills, in that these attributes can have significant relevance in managing projects that demand a broad spectrum of competencies such as planning, organisation, and innovation. However, despite the potential benefits, neurodivergent individuals face significant challenges, including systemic barriers, stereotyping, and underrepresentation, particularly in environments that fail to accommodate their needs and strengths. Therefore, our research aims to delve into the integration of neurodivergent professionals in project management, proposing methods to create more inclusive work environments that leverage the range of distinct abilities. Employing a mixed-methods approach, this study will combine a systematic literature with in-depth, semi-structured interviews with neurodiverse project management professionals. This approach aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the current state of neurodiversity in project management, identify existing gaps, and offer actionable insights to enhance inclusivity and effectiveness in project management practices. Our initial findings suggest a significant gap in literature regarding the intersection of neurodiversity and project management, highlighting the necessity for research that focuses on understanding and improving the integration of neurodivergent professionals in project management. As such, this paper contributes to developing knowledge in project management, and encouraging the cultivation of professional environments that are more inclusive and diverse.
