Abstract:

In this developmental paper, we propose a conceptual framework on multiple identity configurations that incorporates personal and social identities that an individual may possess, and which acknowledges that these identities (may) vary in significance and in whether they are enacted, therefore relating to different identity management strategies. Building on previous research on multiple identity configurations, the paper focuses on lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) employees and discusses the complex interactions among one’s identity as an LGB individual, an employee and a person. We propose that the significance of each identity within an individual's hierarchy of multiple identities, as well as the context within which multiple identities may be enacted constitute factors that influence one’s identity management strategies. The paper aims to offer a nuanced approach to understanding identity management as a complex process that depends on both situation and context, by exploring the interplay of multiple identities at the workplace.
