Abstract:

People with dwarfism experience physical, organisational, and social barriers that can create discriminatory and exclusionary workplaces. Beyond the impact on individuals, such exclusion undermines progress toward the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Despite growing attention to diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI), empirical research examining how organisational environments perpetuate barriers for people with dwarfism is underdeveloped, hindering progress toward effective, equitable, and sustainable workplace practices. Urgent, innovative approaches are therefore needed to address these gaps and align organisations with broader DEI and sustainability agendas. This project will explore the lived experiences of people with dwarfism in workplaces through desk-based research and photo elicitation interviews, providing a contemporary, state-of-the-art analysis of the barriers faced. Adopting an interdisciplinary lens and principles of Universal Design, we will generate evidence-based recommendations through the production of an informational digital handbook to guide DEI policy and practice while advancing progress toward the SDGs.
