Biography

Miguel M. Torres is a lecturer in international business and the director of studies for the MSc in international business at Kent Business School, University of Kent, UK. Previous academic positions include serving as an Associate Senior Research Fellow (2017-2020) and a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Research Fellow (2015-2017) at the Centre for International Business at the University of Leeds. He also taught the "Emerging Markets" module in the MSc of International Business (2019-2020). Dr. Torres also lectured International Macroeconomics, International Auditing, and International Financial Accounting at Catholic University (Portugal) (2015-2016) and International Economics, Introductory Economics, International Business and Public Economics at the University of Aveiro in Portugal (2008-2015). Dr. Torres's international academic experience is extensive, including visiting scholar positions at Uppsala University (Sweden), Politecnico Di Milano (Italy), KU Leuven (Belgium), Instituto Federal Goiano (Ceres, GO) and Universidade Federal de Goiás (Brazil). His PhD in Economics from the University of Aveiro (Portugal), partly developed at LUBS (University of Leeds). His MSc in Management from the University of Algarve & Lisbon School of Economics and executive programs at Harvard School of Public Health, Carnegie Mellon University (USA) and University College London (UK) have provided a solid foundation for his two-decade career. This career, which blends academia and consultancy, is particularly beneficial for collaboration with faculty members and multinational companies, especially those focusing on strategy and restructuring. Dr. Torres is deeply committed to fostering a stimulating educational environment, as evidenced by his supervision of various PhD students and the development of innovative teaching materials. His teaching philosophy, based on experimentalism, emphasises the practical application of theoretical knowledge and aims to prepare students for successful international business and consultancy careers. At KBS, a triple-crown accredited school, Dr. Torres teaches various modules at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, including ”Managing the Multinational Enterprise,” ”Cross‑Cultural Management,” and ”Business Report Supervision.” He moderates several modules at KBS and oversees an international partnership with the Kelley School of Business, Indiana University (USA). Dr. Torres’s consultancy work includes successful collaborations with the World Bank Group on the Business Enabling Environment Report project in Washington, DC (USA), serving as an Expert with the Better Methods Collaboration Group at Campbell Collaboration in Philadelphia, PA (USA), and as an evaluator for Horizon EIC‑2022‑Pathfinder project for the European Commission in Brussels (Belgium). Dr. Torres’ diverse research interests encompass strategy, corporate restructuring, evidence‑based management, policy evaluation, and science implementation. His recent projects include investigating the impact of modularisation and supplier‑buyer integration on the automobile industry and examining the effects of cross‑border corporate insolvency. His research has received prestigious awards, including the highest-level accolade by the China Bureau of International Experts in 2019 for fostering foreign experts’ involvement in scientific research and scholarly exchange. In 2017, he was honoured with the Recognition for Outstanding Contribution as an Academy of International Business Conference Program Co-Track Chair. Before this, he was awarded a Marie S. Curie Research Fellowship in 2015, nominated for the Buckley & Casson PhD Dissertation Award in 2014, and bestowed with the Danny Van Den Bulcke Doctoral Prize in 2011. Dr. Torres is an active member of the Academy of International Business, the European International Business Association, and INSOL International. His work has been published in the International Business Review, Journal of Business Ethics, Academy of International Business Insights, and Multinational Business Review, as well as in various books and chapters in Emerald, IGI Global, Palgrave, and Springer. Dr. Torres's editorial work includes Campbell Systematic Reviews, Journal of International Business Policy, Technovation, International Journal of Emerging Markets, Journal of Management Studies, Journal of World Business and Journal of Asian Business Studies.
