Abstract:

The impact of the changing immigration laws, employment precarity or job insecurity and uncertainty in most sectors have high ramifications for employees on temporary contracts. Indeed, leadership positively impacts employees’ commitment and organisational citizenship behaviour. Albeit evidence for its effect on migrant temporary workers in the face of uncertainties is lacking. Underpinned by Bandura’s social learning theory, the study assesses how followers observe their leaders and replicate desirable prosocial behaviours when constrained by the risks of potential redundancy and removal from the country due to unfavourable regulations. Additionally, it unpacks how employees’ moral identities impact their organisational citizenship behaviours and level of commitment to a temporary employer. Based on a quantitative methodology, primary data will be collected from 500 UK-based migrant and temporary workers using questionnaire surveys. The potential outcome of the study is to identify the challenges these employees encounter and how to mitigate them to bring about measures that foster desirable prosocial behaviours and commitment at work.
