Abstract
Rapid advances in digital technology, embedded with artificial intelligence (AI), are transforming how organisations create value and compete in today’s disruptive business climate. As a result, the role and greater business function of leadership in management is under increasing scrutiny and pressure to evolve to remain relevant and effectively navigate the complexities of human-machine dynamics in the workplace. Furthermore, four distinct generational cohorts are occupying leadership roles in business today, each with unique managerial experience, leadership competence, and technology aptitude. This paper provides an integrative literature review of established literature and contemporary discourse on the evolution of leadership practice in AI-enabled organisations. The study addresses the research questions of How is the role of leadership in management evolving in the age of AI? and What leadership competencies do future leaders need to thrive in AI-enabled organisations? This paper contributes to the emerging body of research on leadership in the age of AI and provides managerial implications on required leadership competency development.
