Abstract
Talking about money is considered essential to financial wellbeing, yet many UK consumers find such conversations taboo. Existing approaches to supporting financial wellbeing emphasise financial literacy and service access but often overlook the relational, cultural and institutional dynamics that inhibit conversations. With one in four UK consumers reporting low financial resilience, a holistic understanding is needed. This paper asks what barriers hinder conversations about money and how can they be supported. Drawing on Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory, qualitative data from participatory LEGO® Serious Play® workshops and interviews is used to identify multilevel influences that shape financial conversations.
