Abstract
Empathizing with Obstfeld’s important research on creative projects, this essay argues how our understanding of such projects has emerged over the years. The essay is sympathetic, because Obstfeld considers creative projects in their relationship with organizational routines and focuses on the system level of analysis, i.e., takes creative projects seriously as being social, temporary systems. The essay goes beyond Obstfeld’s conception by proposing a practice-based approach for analyzing creative processes that considers structure within and beyond projects, i.e., their structural embeddedness. What is more, by considering stability and change as being a duality, it focuses on the tension that arise when organizing for creativity with the help of projects, the still most prominent form of temporary organizing, but by no means the sole form.
