Abstract
Operations and supply chain management (OSCM) is entering a new era driven by Generative AI-powered innovation through data-driven decision support (Bag et al., 2025). Generative AI (GenAI) is transforming supply chain management by moving beyond traditional analytics into prediction, simulation, and automated decision support. Powered by technologies like Generative AI and large language models (LLMs), it helps companies respond faster to disruptions, optimize operations, and improve resilience. The emergence of GEN AI is transforming business processes and models across industries (Kothari, 2023; Agrawal et al., 2022) and reshape the paradigms of entrepreneurship and innovation (Jackson et al., 2024). Previous research in the field of analytics and OSCM (Operations Supply Chain Management) have shown that data driven decision capabilities improve organisational performance and resilience (Rana et al., 2024; Dubey et al., 2019; Ivanov and Dolgui, 2021).
Many supply chain companies (including Amazon, Walmart, DHL, Unilever) are using GEN AI directly in operations or via AI-enhanced platforms for supply chain planning, forecasting, logistics and optimisination. However, there is lack of knowledge on how GEN AI contributes to organisational outcomes and the role that supply chain resilience and the leadership characteristics on this.
The existing literature about the Gen-AI/ChatGPT in supply chain management remains limited or it is at the infancy stage regarding the empirical work or theoretical developments in that area (Hendriksen, 2023; Cribben & Zeinali, 2023). This research aims to foster the current research and the critical insights on the leadership style required for the adoption of GEN AI, enhancing supply chain resilience through GEN AI contributes to supply chain performance.
Drawing upon the Dynamic Capabilities View (DCV), our study looks into the role of the digital leader towards the adoption of GEN AI and we develop a framework that we propose how the supply chain resilience mediates the relationship between GEN AI and improved supply chain performance. Also, with this work we would like to explore how to develop the digital leadership skills needed to engage with GEN AI as informed decision-makers, consultants or policy makers.
