Abstract
Higher education is undergoing rapid change as Artificial Intelligence begins to reshape traditionally rigid academic structures into more flexible, technology-rich learning environments. This study uses a comparative approach to examine how Artificial Intelligence (AI) is being integrated into higher education, with a focus on the contrasting disciplines of business and engineering. The choice of these fields is deliberate, reflecting their distinct educational objectives and skill development priorities. By evaluating how these diverse areas adapt to technological disruption, this research provides a comprehensive assessment of AI’s versatility across the academic spectrum.
In business education, where the core focus lies on leadership, ethical reasoning, and strategic decision-making, AI tools—such as intelligent tutoring systems and data dashboards—are utilized to create high-stakes simulations. These tools challenge a student’s judgment in complex, dynamic organizational environments. Conversely, engineering education prioritizes technical problem-solving, experimental design, and system optimization. In this context, AI facilitates the use of "digital twins" and virtual simulations, allowing students to engage in hands-on technical application and experimentation without the physical risks or high costs associated with traditional laboratories.
Beyond these disciplinary distinctions, the paper identifies "common wins" applicable to both fields, such as the automation of routine administrative tasks like grading and the delivery of personalized, immediate feedback. These advancements allow faculty to refocus on mentorship and high-impact research. However, the study also addresses significant challenges, including data privacy, algorithmic bias, and the risk of over-reliance on technology at the expense of critical thinking. By merging traditional pedagogical values with AI-driven methods, both disciplines are finding new ways to prepare students for a complex workforce. Ultimately, this paper offers practical insights for administrators and faculty, aiming to harness AI’s potential to create inclusive, flexible, and future-ready learning environments.
