Abstract
Artificial intelligence (AI) integration in qualitative research methodologies is becoming indispensable, transforming traditional methodological processes and prompting concerns over interpretive precision, methodological rigor and critical reflexivity. Concerns persist among qualitative researchers about AI's ability to explore and interpret participants’ implicit perceptions. The current study addresses these concerns and highlights how AI poses challenges and how qualitative researchers can navigate through them. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with nineteen qualitative researchers working in educational institutions who have used AI for their research. Findings highlight how researchers incorporate AI in research methodology. AI has epistemological learning limitations due to its training corpora. It limits AI capability to explore experiences and develop new insights. It reinforces existing norms, misrepresenting unexplored areas, minorities and marginalized groups, creating a biased and stereotypical worldview. Hallucinations and non-cohesive arguments misdirect the findings. Finally, the study recommends how researchers can navigate these challenges and use AI responsibly.
