Abstract
While workforce resilience has gained momentum over recent years, gaps remain in understanding how it is impacted by ongoing adversity. This paper, framed in a disaster/crisis context in the tourism industry, investigates contributors to employee resilience and how they are influenced by management practices. This research is based on 24 multi-stakeholder focus groups from five geographic regions across three years. Our findings demonstrate multiple intersecting aspects of workforce resilience, management practices, and challenges. Through the application of Bronfenbrenner’s bioecological systems model, we offer a framework for employee resilience based on cross-level (individual, microsystem, mesosystem, macrosystem) enablers of workforce resilience. The paper contributes by demonstrating the intersecting approaches to, and enablers of, employee and organisational resilience.
