Abstract
This developmental paper explores the motivations, specific activities, enablers and barriers influencing SME–university collaboration in digital transformation for sustainable development. Drawing on open innovation theory, the research employs semi-structured interviews with SME owners to develop an in-depth understanding of this phenomenon. The study contributes to the open innovation literature and offers practical and policy implications for leveraging digital transformation to support sustainable development within the SME context.
