Abstract
Food waste is a major sustainability issue globally with significant economic, environmental and social impacts. It is estimated that about one-third of the food produced globally is lost or wasted every year, leading to resource depletion, greenhouse gas emissions and food insecurity (Parfitt et al., 2010; Seberini, 2020). In developing countries experiencing rapid urbanization such as Lagos State Nigeria, poor waste management practices and linear economic models contribute to increased food waste generation. Circular economy (CE) is a promising solution that can help convert food waste into resources through recycling, composting, food recovery and redistribution, and waste-to-energy technologies. However, the adoption of circular economy practices in developing countries has been limited by institutional, economic, and technological barriers.
This research examines the adoption of circular economy practices for managing food waste in Lagos State Nigeria and the economic and social impact associated with these practices. The research utilized a mixed-methods approach, collecting quantitative data through surveys conducted among stakeholders in the food supply chain and qualitative data through interviews with policymakers, waste management companies, and sustainability experts. The study found that inadequate infrastructure, weak policy regulations, lack of awareness among stakeholders, and limited financial resources are some of the key challenges impeding the adoption of circular economy practices. However, there are opportunities for circular business models, waste-to-energy solutions, and food recovery and redistribution programs.
This study provides insights into the implementation of circular economy practices in developing countries and offers policy recommendations that can help improve sustainable food waste management practices in Lagos State Nigeria. The research highlights the potential for circular economy initiatives to create economic value while addressing food insecurity and promoting sustainable urban development.
