Abstract
This developmental paper is concerned with the effect of the adoption of advanced technologies on the organisation of creative practice. We address the calls for more detailed studies of how digital technology impacts on work practices in the creative industries (Khlystova, Kalyuzhnova and Belitski, 2022; Tsou and Chen, 2023). In particular, we ask how the use of VR technology by a group of craft workers enables, shapes and limits different values, configurations and techniques of making. We approach this question through an exploration of the adoption of VR technology by craft workers during the DISTANCE project run by Applied Arts Scotland. We adopt a qualitative methodology to abductively analyse documentary evidence linked to the project, including funding reports, webpages, recordings of events, a digital exhibition and a podcast miniseries. Our analysis is underway and will be significantly progressed by the time of the BAM2024 conference.
