Abstract
This paper argues that entrepreneurial leadership (EL) – a phenomenon in its emergent stages of conceptual development that lacks a robust understanding of the drivers and mechanisms that underpin it. Arguably, the origins and antecedents of EL are as vague as the understanding of the term itself and hence can benefit from a microfoundational examination. To strengthen the case of why and how a microfoundations approach may benefit the EL field, I present a review of microfoundations research in management, provide a comprehensive understanding of this approach and subsequently connect it to EL research to identify future directions.
