Abstract
This developmental paper considers the methodological challenges of interpreting English-language accounts of the Spanish Civil War, as found in the letters and diaries of International Brigade members, and fictional and biographical titles by well-known authors. Though the lens of standpoint epistemology, it considers questions relating to the limitations and affordances of ‘outside’ voices and ‘external’ interpretations of this important event in modern European history.
