Abstract
The development paper examines the integration of responsible corporate governance to ensure long-term sustainability in the professional football industry. It explores the financial vulnerabilities exposed by recent crises, including the COVID-19 pandemic and controversial proposals like the European Super League. The paper identifies the interplay between corporate governance, responsible business practices, and sustainability, emphasising the unique stakeholder dynamics within football. The significance of the study is emphasised by the financial vulnerabilities within the football industry, as highlighted by the COVID-19 pandemic's impact and the strategic concerns raised by the UK Government. The paper notes the global football industry's economic footprint, pointing out the particular vulnerability of professional football organisations to crises and the consequent need for robust governance structures that can navigate these and emphasise ethical decision-making, financial transparency, and stakeholder communication. The methodology outlined for the project is a mixed-methods approach designed to address the research question comprehensively. This multifaceted approach aims to yield a comprehensive understanding of the long-term sustainability challenges in the professional football industry.
