Abstract
This working paper explores the barriers faced by women in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM), and Finance fields in a South Asian society, where cultural values and gender disparity create unique challenges for women pursuing careers in male-dominated industries. It also examines the factors that motivate women to pursue careers in these fields. Drawing on data from semi-structured interviews with 26 women working in various STEM&F fields in Pakistan, it contributes to the existing literature by exploring the barriers and motivating factors for women in STEM&F fields through the lens of gender role theory and self-efficacy theory. By identifying gaps in societal and organizational practices that hinder career progression, this research aims to support and empower women in STEM&F professions. The on-going analysis also aims to uncover effective career management strategies for women in these fields.
