Abstract
Despite the recognized importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), many organizations remain mired in compliance-driven efforts that can incite backlash or fail to produce lasting cultural change. This developmental paper investigates how to reframe DEI as an ongoing, business-critical process by applying the CADENCE model—a seven-step roadmap (Compliance, Alignment, Deployment, Evaluation, Normalization, Catalyzing, and Effectiveness). Drawing on contemporary data from major global companies in Europe, the UK, the Middle East, and the United States, we highlight persistent gaps between signalled diversity efforts and the infrastructure necessary to achieve them. In light of growing resistance to DEI, notably in the U.S., we propose that embedding DEI within broader business, political and social evolution is crucial for sustainable transformation. For the next phase, we will integrate additional empirical data, refine the model’s relevance across different legal contexts, and welcome conference feedback to solidify practical recommendations.
