Abstract
This paper builds on original research undertaken in 2019 by the authors exploring the Current Reality Tree diagram of the Welsh Marine Renewable Energy (MRE) supply chain (Mason-Jones et al, 2019). The Theory of Constraints approach emphasises the importance of not only understanding a systems current state via a current Reality Tree (CRT) but for optimised effective performance a Future Reality Tree (FRT) should be developed that explores and illustrates what the system should aim for in terms of its future goals (Goldratt, 1990). A future Reality Tree diagram enables the visualisation of the cause-and-effect relationships outlining the future goals, offering a pathway to achieve desired results within a holistic system (Chou et al, 2012). Therefore, a FRT diagram offers a bridge between the current and future situations (Dettmer, 2007, Datt et al, 2024).
