Abstract
Abstract
Purpose: Drawing on the self-expansion model and achievement goal theory, the present study develops a serial mediation-moderation model to investigate the impact of empowering leadership (EL) on adaptive performance (AP). The study identifies relational identification (RI) and proactive vitality management (PVM) as the underlying mechanism of this relationship. Moreover, the study examines the moderating effect of learning goal orientation (LGO).
Methodology: A multi-source survey was conducted to collect data from 315 supervisor-subordinate dyads from the service and manufacturing sector.
Findings: The results revealed that EL positively impacts AP while RI and PVM serially mediated this relationship. Additionally, LGO moderated the positive effect of PVM on AP.
Originality/Value: The study offers new insights by elucidating leadership processes through self-expansion. It establishes a foundation for fostering favorable social interactions in the workplace by demonstrating interlinked relationships.
