Abstract
This paper will report on a qualitative case study into place leadership for environmental sustainability in a small-town setting. The paper identifies place leadership as a suitable theoretical framework to explore the way in which multiple social actors interact in order to promote environmental practices in a small town. Green leadership is found to be located in the town council and its officers but also in many voluntary sector organisations and individual residents, as well as some private sector organisations. Green leadership is found to be informal as well as formal, and distributed and relational, rather than hierarchical.
