Abstract
In this paper, we study the number and magnitude of reported scams on the Bitcoin blockchain. We characterize the types of scams and show which exchanges scammers use and where these scammers come from. We further show that the victims of scams sell any remaining Bitcoin immediately. Finally, and most importantly, we show that AML laws have a significant impact on the usage of exchanges once they are introduced, especially by scammers.
