Abstract
Seminal papers on sensemaking in organisational and management literature have provided explanations for the collapse of sensemaking or sensemaking failure. Despite these studies, we know little about sensemaking challenges in dealing with social issues and how and why they impact the sensemaking processes. In this paper, we address these issues by focusing on social issues. Thus, we conduct a systematic review of the literature employing the qualitative meta-analysis methodology, examine the sensemaking challenges and solutions and explore their significance in addressing complex social issues within and across organisations. In our analysis, we identified two categories of sensemaking challenges including cognition-based challenges and action-based challenges.
