Abstract
The aim of this developmental paper is to report on the initial findings of an action research project exploring how systems theory could support the delivery of complex projects. The paper begins with an overview of systems thinking and how it could support the delivery of complex projects. It identifies that a methodology called Critical Systems Practice may offer some value however notes there is limited evidence of how the methodology could be utilised within a project delivery context. The preliminary findings from the first of three action research cycles are then discussed along with details of how these findings have influenced the direction of the subsequent research activities. The paper concludes with reflections on the suitability of systems thinking to support managers of complex projects and details of how the paper will continue to develop prior to the conference.
