Abstract
This paper begins to address the significant gap in the understanding of how organisations effectively develop CE understanding and innovation capability in terms implementing CE principles within their organisations (Goyal et al, 2021). The IPCC report advised: “climate change is a grave and mounting threat to our wellbeing and a healthy planet” (2022 p6) underlining the importance of organisations developing Circular Economy (MacArthur, 2015) innovation strategies and operational plans, to avert the existential threat humans face. The paper provides insights for practitioners, academics, and policymakers on the effective pedagogical approaches to enhancing the CE implementation capabilities of practitioners. The paper reviews published grey and academic literature circular economy (CE) development interventions (programmes, courses, workshops, networks, CoPs, etc.) that are available to practitioners in Wales, a region of the UK, and comments on their efficacy in terms of developing practitioner CE implementation capabilities. We focus on the pedagogy of the interventions identified and discuss the mechanisms employed that enable practitioners to understand and subsequently implement CE principles within their organisations. The paper presents empirical data collected through a survey to practitioners and twenty-one semi structured interviews. This study reveals the complexity of new CE process implementation at the firm level and the processes adopted by organisations that have successfully implemented CE principles. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.
