Abstract
Purpose: The present research expands the debate on environmental sustainability in the wine industry by observing how management academia has addressed this topic from last twelve years. Since literature regarding wine and sustainability is quite recent but there have also been important governmental and private initiatives regarding this issue, we have decided to portrait the actual state of the art to highlight what areas have been studied and what need more attention.
Design/Methodology/approach: The research is structured as a systematic literature review of academic papers from 2009 till the first half of 2022. This methodology provides a clear overview of sustainable management practices that have been adopted or could be adopted throughout the entire agri-food wine production process.
Findings: The literature review provides a categorization of the papers divided in major topic, the most recurrent ones, and secondary topics. The classification has been made according to the prevalence criterion after a in depth reading of each paper to find the leading themes.
Originality/Value: From a theoretical point of view the paper has the scope to highlight the areas majorly explored and to identify the literature gaps for future researches. This paper would like to be a starting point for management scholars, providing them a useful instrument to deepen the analysis of sustainability in a so complex industry and align the interest of academia and wine companies
