Abstract
This study examines the experiences of teaching and research staff at Finnish universities regarding diversity, gender equality, and inclusion in their own research groups. The study is based on a survey with 2,675 respondents from Finnish universities and universities of applied sciences. The survey includes 2,599 written answers to open-ended questions. Drawing on this qualitative material, the study examines respondents' experiences of diversity and gender equality in their own research groups, and their views on equality and diversity. Although academics’ experiences of diversity and gender equality have been studied extensively internationally, relatively little attention has been paid to team activities from this perspective, and many researchers have called for more research on the implementation of equality in everyday practices. A better understanding of how equality and diversity are realised in research groups can help management, group leaders, supervisors, and all staff members to improve the quality of equality work.
