Abstract
This research explores how multinational enterprises (MNEs) implement their research and development (R&D) and innovation strategies in the context of rising Techno-Nationalism (TN). It analyses how MNEs can leverage the influences of TN to gain operational advantages while establishing Industry 5.0 (I5.0) capabilities.
An in-depth multiple case study approach is adopted. We collected secondary data from five case studies. Our research reveals the key dimensions shaping R&D strategy for innovation within the context of TN and I5.0, conceptualized as an MNEs’ Technological-Organizational Framework. First, strategic technological advancement is characterized by its role in promoting decoupling to reinforce national identity. Second, TN-I5.0 is defined by three core domains: strategy, operations, and information technology. Third, TN-I5.0 has implications that extend to design, technology, organization, management, and performance assessment. Fourth, TN-I5.0 influences MNE operations at organizational, network, and societal levels.
