Abstract
Psychological safety is essential for effective teamwork, yet its study relies mainly on cross‑sectional self‑report surveys that overlook its dynamic and nuanced nature. This developmental paper addresses these limitations by developing a video‑based observational codebook to capture micro‑level verbal and non‑verbal behaviours indicative of psychological safety in real work teams. Inspired by and building on existing codebooks and several field tests, the developed codebook enables longitudinal and behaviourally-precise analysis of team interactions. Through this methodological innovation, we aim to advance theoretical understanding of psychological safety’s evolution and potentially offer scholars and practitioners alike a practical tool for diagnosing and improving psychological safety in organisations.
